Photo Transfer

Front of Photo Quilt

This quilt was inspired by a new Grand Daughter that is just a month old when I write this post.
A Grand Dad to be who just happens to be an Artist and Writer asked me if there was any way photos and drawings could be transferred onto fabric to make a gift for his daughter, Son In Law and new baby Grand Daughter?
A Grand Daughter who was to be born at the end of July in Australia. Visit planned to deliver said gift in the middle of September so time of the essence.
When he told me the story of 'Twizzle Bump', the affectionate name for said 'bump' and what he wanted to include I was up for the challenge.

Over several weeks of planning, painting pictures, collecting fabrics and transferring photos onto a photo fabric. Excitement Grew as Baby Coral was born and those photos could be added to the design.
I over the years have transferred many photos etc onto fabric in many different ways and this prepared fabric is the best for endurance so it can be washed and lasts.

It was then a matter of patch working all the pieces together and interpreting the significance of each photo and matching it up with appropriate fabrics and the location within the design.

Detail of Photo Quilt showing new Grand Daughter 'Coral

Back of Photo Quilt
The Photos are:
Swans of Perth, Australia where Coral was born
Light Owl, her surname
Her first photo
Hospital Cot Label
The morning sky in space the time she was born
A Kangaroo and Joey in pouch
and of course
the flags of the parents Britain and Australia

The Photo Transfer Paper I can highly recommend.
The Benefits are,
It was easy to use.
Went through the printer easily.
Didn't Smudge.
Took well to ironing.
Good quality for piecing.
Held together well as a final quilt.
Washed well.
Didn't fade.(Although we know after many uses, light and washes this may fade over time like any photograph).

The Oriental Cathedral Window

This is the next project for a Textile Session.
It's an Oriental Cathedral Window.
Machine and Hand Sewing Techniques
make it a great project.
Each block window allows you to enjoy the fabric.

Rotary Mat Bag

We all love this colourful Rotary Mat Bag made by Barbara.
Barbara tried two different ways of quilting.
She used a walking foot and Machine Quilting on one side
and hand quilting on the other.
She admitted she has fallen in love with hand quilting and wants
to do some more.
Just a great bag for putting your Rotary Mat, Ruler and Cutter in.
We teach how to use the Rotary Cutter and equipment in
the studio.

It is always lovely to see so many quilts being made and

Trip Around The World Quilt Finished

Danni has nearly finished her very large quilt.
Her first ever Quilt!
It is made up of six and half inch squares.
The pattern is called 'Trip around the World'.
Danni made it for a Super Kingsized Bed and
made it in the  'Quilt as You Go Method'.
Taking sections, quilting them and then putting
them altogether.
Danni is putting on the last of the bias binding and she's
 finished.
Well done Danni!

Megs Pink Quilt

Meg is now making the bias binding for this pink quilt for one of
her grand daughter's.
The bias is made from all the scraps left over so it's really
colourful too!.

First Quilt for Karen

Karen has just come along to the Textile Thursday Session
and she was a cross-stitcher but wants to learn Patchwork and Quilting.
She had been given a charm pack and started putting it together
as a quillo sized quilt.
The masking tape labels are to help sew together,
especially as you need to
collect it all together to go home.
Or move it due to space constraints.
If you don't label you often find you put them back
together in a totally different sequence.
This makes it easier.
Karen got to grips with the rotary cutter really quick and
learnt lots of lessons with the seven eights
(when making the half triangles).
Karen brought along the cross-stitch she had framed to give
to her Mum.
Beautiful!

Hexagon Quilt

Suze made this Hexagon Quilt for a friend that needs TLC at the moment.
We all loved it and felt it had a Japanese feel due to its simplicity
and  red and black material borders.

Muriel has Completed Her Floral Quilt

Muriel has finished her Flowers and Dresden Plate Quilt.
It looks stunning and I am in awe of the Machine Stitching..
Well done Muriel.

Doris Finishes Her Sampler Quilt

Doris has finished her Sampler Quilt and she is so pleased.
This is her first ever patchwork quilt.
Well Done Doris.

Mo's Son's Shirt Quilt

Mo's children have all moved out and she is slowly sorting through all of the treasures they have left behind!
One of her sons seem to have left a vast selection of shirts!
Mo had seen stripped quilts in magazines and books and decided his shirts would make an ideal
man size, Quillo.
We all helped unpicking the shirts and decided on a size rectangle which would sew together well.
One side is quite dark and Mo has lightened it up with some photo transfer and stitch.
The other is the lighter shirts.
Mo has also embroidered his name, a ladder ( he is climbing Mount Everest soon) and added many of the labels that mean something onto it too!

Hand Patchwork and Quilting Class

Adrienne holds a Hand Patchwork and Quilting Class in the studio alternate
Wednesday afternoons.
They are very productive and has a lovely atmosphere.
Adrienne gives out lots of tips and patterns each session and helps participants to move
on with their projects.
I love it too because I am able to see all the different hand projects being made
and the wonderful quilts on the large table.
The studio is fully equipped for textiles

Jelly Roll Strips to Squares

This is another Jelly Roll Quilt in the making.
All the fabric strips have been joined together in groups of six.
These then were cut into blocks of 12.5"
A sash was then put between and joined as a single quilt.

Jelly Roll Quilt

When you buy a Jelly Roll Pack of fabric there are so many patterns to choose from
and so many books you can choose these patterns from now.
This is a quilt made by Heatheranne. I just love the colour combination.

Adrienne's Wednesday Afternoon Patchwork and Quilting Group

On alternate Wednesday afternoon Adrienne has a
hand patchwork and quilting group.
It is such a lovely group and it has such a lovely
atmosphere in the studio.
(Adrienne completed her City and Guilds part 2
with me).
The group is for beginners and experienced alike and
they are all working on their own
projects. Here you can see 'Bean Huts',
laid out on the large quilt table.
The group is having a chat about how it is coming along
and whats going to be added next.
Adrienne also is the wonderful lady who organises
the important coach trips out to Duxford and The NEC!
There are still a few places left for the March 7th,
if you want to contact THe Old Art Room for details.
The coach leaves from Swaffham and also picks up in
Kings Lynn.
I am really looking forward to it, as usual!

Jenny's King Sized Quilt

Jenny has been making this king sized quilt out of recycled fabrics
collected from charity and thrift shops.
It has a beautiful soft and 'Rosey' look to it.
Beautiful!
We all admired her patience as she undid some of the seams,
"Retro Stitching" (meaning "unpicking of seams!").
Why?
So she can put the layers together and "Quilt as you go".
A more manageable way of machine quilting.
It was pinned together by many hands as you can see by above.
It was so lovely because Jenny hadn't expected it.
We gathered round to see it and then I dished out the safety pins
and we all helped pin.
Making it quick and social :)
Over to you Jenny to quilt it.
