Stitch A Day

Stitch A Day

With the lockdowns and need to really get back into embroidery again on a daily basis I thought it was a a great way of making a project that lasted all year with keeping 'Christmas in my Heart', which I am combining with my Christmas Blog. While I am stitching for the day I am working out the next step of the Christmas Project and challenge. Link below.

Year of Stitches

A Project this year set up by Sara from BrownPaperStirch

Stitch A Day is a project originally created by artist Hannah Claire Somerville.

"1 Year of Stitches. The first stitches have been made....... I am interested in the impact of marks that an individual makes on a daily basis. Big or small, our daily activities are often time unquantifiable and intangible.

I am approaching this project as a personal map making, the fabric ground represents each day of 2016. With a needle and thread representing my actions throughout the day. I will embroider maybe one or more stitches (hopefully) everyday and photograph the result. The embroidery what I create will become a tangible, visual, conversational account of the decisions, movements, and sometimes lack there of, that make each day. I hope to use this project as a means of creating mindfulness and deeper reflection upon the choices we make as a society."

Rules and Stipulations

1. My fabric ground consists of 12"x12" swatch of unbleached Onsaburg. The thread I use may change daily and I may adhere additional types of media to my swatch with thread.

2. I will embroider something on my fabric ground and post a photograph of the result each day.

Things to consider,

*Plan idea of Embroidery or organic?

*Chose one stitch to repeat or learn different ones.

*Colour choice.

*Types of thread or threads.

Equipment (mine above)

Fabric, plain colour, medium weight so it doesn't need a foundation fabric.

Needles

Scissors

Threads

Pencil or marking pen

Hoop

Project bag or container to keep everything together.

Here is the first seven days of the project.

Day 1

Planned the project,
You don't have to have a finished project, you can be random and fill a piece of fabric as a mindfulness piece.
Mine a  Christmas project, a Christmas Bauble Cushion, full of the embroidered stitches. The finished embroidery to be appliquéd onto to a foundation fabric to make a cushion to treasure.
I collected all the equipment items together.

Day 2
Drew a circle the size of the Bauble and large enough to last the year. Drew two lines in the centre far enough apart to make a design in the middle.
Drew a wavy line down the centre of the two lines. Couched this line.

Day 3 Chained stitched one side of this wavy line.

Day 4 Chain stitched the other side of the wavy line.

Day 5 Couched thread down one of the centre band lines

Day 6 Chain stitched on the outside of the couched line.

Day 7 Chain stitched the other side of the couched line.

These are some of the items I use and can recommend by clicking and shopping on Amazon the studio has a small donation at no cost to yourself, Thank You.

Secrets and samplers

The latest Old Art Room window has gone up, entitled 'secrets and samplers'.  The samplers hide the secrets and magic that is going on in the studio in January whilst it's closed - in preparation for the coming year, and trust us, it's a hive of activity here! The beautiful samplers were made on antique tray cloths which have been kindly donated to the studio over the years. These have been hand embroidered by studio team members, clients and friends and the thoughtful quotes were chosen by different people as well. We really appreciate everyone's hard work to make such an unusual window display and we hope you like it too! The video shows the work in putting the samplers together and the secret workings going on in the studio behind closed doors...Click the video picture link to watch!

We open the Studio Shop on the 8th of January, This week I alsways take the time to create and play in the in the studio. Time to enjoy the space, new ideas and use the materials and 'stuff' Stewart and I have sorted out over the break. It's also a time to visit the years inspiration and plot the new workshops on the diary. Making and Sampling is key for me, it feels like play and is ohh so necessary for me to start the year off this way. Getting out the UFO"S (unfinished objects) and either finishing them or re-making them is always a great way to start too. This is always part of the 'Winter Challenge' that I set before the holidays.

Welcome, to Rita our new Italian Tailor who will be in the studio every Wednesday for Alterations and Tailoring. (Rita had a few weeks before Christmas to get stuck in and those that had their clothing altered were really happy). Most alteration requests are accepted and rates are dependant on the type of garment and time it will take. Rita is in on the 8th of January so pop in and say 'Hello'.

Rita will also be asisisting me making the costumes for the window and shop makes, to carry on the inspiration of each month, lots of exciting things planned. If there are makes that you would like to see in the shop, please let us know. Our first costume is something 'Blue' in the 'Outlander' Style, especially for the Hogmany Studio Window for the end of January. Lots of tweed, Tartan and warm materials.

Brenda has amazing Embroidery Sessions Booked in the Diary and the once month Crewel Embroidery Friday, is an amazing session to finish the creative week, held once a month.
Brenda has a selection of her kits in the studio shop.

Violets by Brenda
February 6th and 8th

Liz will be  back in the Studio Shop on Thursday and is plotting new costume ideas for this year too:)) Everyone who saw the embroidery on her 'Game of Thrones', Dress were in ore. Aided by Brenda who instigated the stitches and Liz brought them to life:)) Liz's and Daniel's wedding prepration makes, were amazing and we all enjoyed the week by week reveal, angsts and the wedding photos are beautiful:)))
She is also sharing with us lots of her makes for their new home:))

Jayne, is back in the studio and is holding a Dog Needlefelting Brooch Session, on the 27th of February 2018. Places are limited as it is a popular session.

Celebrating Year Of The Dog,
with this brooch.
He is so cute and clever!

Mollie is working hard as usual and spent a very creative year making pencil rolls, brush rolls, teddy bears and hearts (a Mollie stitched Heart is in the new January window). She is open for commissions:))) It is so good to see Mollie using her newely won and earnt sewing machine. Everything is made to such a high standard. We are so proud of Mollie and thank her for all time spent in the studio:)))

One of Mollie's Pencil Roll and the Owl is by Lee on our Monday Art Session

'Show and Tell' is always amazing, Thank you so much to all who share and participate. We all enjoy and learn so much. So here's to another year of this:)))

Book Page

Mary is creating an Embroidered Book.
Full of interesting creative techniques.
This page is a piece of dyed velvet, dyed scrim,
embroidery threads and beads.
It is an interesting contemporary drawn thread technique.
Making a stitch and pulling back the threads of the scrim,
stitching it into a circle revealing more of the
velvet underneath.
French knots and beads are added to give it more detail.
